New technologies help much to reduce energy consumption
Paris – New technologies consume much energy and emit greenhouse gases, but if we take into account the savings they can perform in all sectors, the balance is clearly positive, says the Academy of Technology, in a report released Friday, while that takes place at Le Bourget, near Paris, the COP21 conference on climate.
According to this study, the contribution of information technology and communication (ICT) in efforts to reduce energy consumption in other industries widely proves greater impact generated by their use.
The information and communications technology accounted, in 2012, 4.7% of the electricity consumed on the planet, and a carbon footprint estimated at 1.7% of the global total, said the Academy of Technology, a public institution under the Ministry of Research.
This weight is steady and sustained rise, but in smaller proportions than the growth of uses thanks to technological innovations developed by industry to improve the energy efficiency of their products and equipment, the report, which takes into account computer equipment, devices and telecommunications infrastructure and energy intensive data centers.
Above all, the contributions of ICT to alleviating the energy bill and carbon footprint of other sectors are evident and called to intensify in the future, the Academy added, citing transport, energy optimization buildings, industrial applications or procedures dematerialized as areas of particularly suitable application.
In addition, the recovery of the heat emitted by the computer equipment is a track that would amplify economies , the report
