dogs have an internal compass: evidence for their needs – 1 Photo
Lost in the middle of the woods with your dog, without being able to guide you? Do not panic: your best friend can help you out there. How? Just by looking to its needs. Priori surprising idea. Yet it has been validated by a team of German and Czech researchers led by Hynek Burda (University of Duisburg-Essen) in the columns of the journal Frontiers in Zoology .

To reach these conclusions, the scientists asked the owners of 70 dogs, 37 different breeds, observe their pets during urination and defecation in the using a compass. With almost 7500 data, they deduced that canines preferentially relieved along a north-south axis as the Earth’s magnetic field is stable. This behavior was even more pronounced for large commission.
What then reveals this study? If only the interest represented by such practices for dogs, some imagining that help them navigate their environment is unknown, this research suggests that at least our pets, such as cows, can be sensitive the Earth’s magnetic field. Which had not yet been demonstrated for canines.

Is the explanation for successful journeys of some dogs that have traveled hundreds of miles to return to their homes? The authors consider seriously, although there is still a study on a larger scale to check their preliminary results. But if they are accurate, similar studies could be conducted in other mammals, such as cats and perhaps humans, to see if they also have sensors sensitive to the magnetic field of the Earth.
