Supercomputer: China's first new superpower ... - ZDNet

Technology: Tianhe-2 displays 33.86 petaflops of computing power, the more power supercomputer in the world, and it is Chinese. But 252 of the 500 most powerful computers in the world are American, 66 against China.

This is not a first for China, but rather a confirmation of his ability to design very powerful supercomputers. Thus, for the second time, the country removes the United States in the first place ranking Top500 supercomputers.

With Tianhe-2 and its 33.86 petaflops of computing power, China beats out Titan Cray system prestigious American Laboratory and Oak Ridge 17.59 pflops. How? By combining particular, 3.12 million processor cores (Intel Xeon and Xeon Phi Ivybridge).

223 petaflops of computing power in the world

However, the advantage of numbers is undoubtedly the American side. Of the 500 ranking of supercomputers, 252 are actually based in the United States against “only” 66 for China. France, it has 23, two more than in the previous edition of the Top500 (November 2012).

But beyond rivalry China / United States, ranking illustrates the continued growth of the power of supercomputers. Example:

26 petaflop systems there are in the world, against 23 six months ago.

In addition, 500 supercomputers represent a total computing power of 223 petaflops. Last November, when the previous edition of the ranking, the power was 162 pflops. The increase is a little over 37%.
