Italian astronaut had to interrupt emergency Tuesday a spacewalk at the International Space Station (ISS) due to a leak in his helmet, announced NASA. “After a little over an hour in space, Luca Parmitano, the European Space Agency, said having water floating behind his head inside his helmet,” said the agency U.S. space.
Luca Parmitano and U.S. astronaut Chris Cassidy accompanying him suddenly interrupted hastily their mission and returned to the orbital laboratory research at 13h29 GMT, according to NASA TV. Crew members were then immediately removed his helmet. Chris Cassidy said his colleague was “doing well.” “None of the two astronauts were in real danger throughout (the mission),” said the commentator on NASA TV, adding that the source of the leak was “not easily identifiable.” The causes of the incident were still unclear Tuesday.
The objective of this spacewalk, the second of two scheduled this month, was to prepare the ISS for the arrival of a new Russian module and perform some repairs. The output lasted one hour and 32 minutes, said NASA. It was initially supposed to last six hours and 15 minutes.
