End of mission for Herschel - Generation NT

The European Space Agency announced the death of Herschel earlier this week, the reserves of liquid helium Space Telescope reaching exhaustion, and it is finally Wednesday that 2,300 liters taken have been exhausted.

télescope Herschel Necessary for cooling embedded instruments which can operate only around absolute zero, the telescope is now warming up, and some of its instruments should not be used.

ESA welcomes one of the most prolific in the history space programs with more than 25,000 hours of recordings collected as Göran Pillbratt, project scientist “said Herschel gave us a totally new vision the universe, showing us things that we were hidden so far as processes never seen of star birth and galaxy formation. “

Herschel was the largest space telescope for astronomy in the spectral range of infrared and submillimeter. Carrying several instruments (Speyer, PACS or Stereo), the telescope was equipped with the largest mirror built for a telescope placed in space (3.50 m diameter)

It is the telescope collecting data on the asteroid Apophis had grazed Earth in January and should make new crossings nearby in 2029 and 2036.However

telescope remains controllable, and should continue to be issued with the basics on the ground before being placed in heliocentric orbit in the month of May. In addition, the amount of data collected should provide a few years working with scientists from ESA, the program is far from over.
