(Boursier.com) – Astrium (EADS Group ) successfully launched three satellites Swarm she designed and made. These satellites were launched successfully at 13:02 CET, by a Rockot from the Russian Plesetsk Cosmodrome, about 800 km north of Moscow. Astrium is prime contractor for the Swarm mission on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA). These satellites were injected in their respective orbit about 92 minutes after launch.
For a period of at least 4 years, the Swarm mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) measure, with an unprecedented degree of accuracy, the magnetic field of the Earth and its evolution. The results provide a better understanding of how the interior of our planet and its interaction with the space.
The research on the magnetic field are also of considerable practical interest, since they are expected to ultimately improve the accuracy of navigation compass or gyroscope, and thus, for example, directional drilling for resource. Such research should also help improve space weather models.
