Tara is a sailing ship with two masts, with a metal shell. On board were 15 people, including six scientists, instruments specifically developed to collect and analyze the sea water, but also two laboratories to make a first selection and retain samples of algae, viruses or bacteria, in good condition until the end of the trip in mid-December.
summer of 2012 was marked by the melting of the largest Arctic ice for thousands of years.
