International Astronomical Union (IAU) is a band V’tosh ka’tur! They suggested users to choose a name for the two moons discovered orbiting Pluto before voting for their favorite. And the name was chosen No. 1 Vulcan, as the home planet of Mr. Spock in Star Trek . And despite the democratic vote, the IAU has rejected the name. Here’s why …
First, you should know that this is the actor William Shatner (the one who plays Captain Kirk in the series) who proposed the name Vulcan. Very soon the news spread among the fans who have largely supported the name. The IAU has garnered more than 170,000 votes to 500,000 for one of the two satellites of Pluto called Vulcan.
Only the IAU, they take very seriously their responsibility. And if today it’s cool to have a moon called Vulcan them, they do not care. First IAU asked that satellites are a Roman name in connection with Pluto, god of the underworld, (we must recognize that it’s pretty cool anyway). (FYI, the three other satellites of Pluto are Charon, Nix and Hydra.)
more have nothing to do with the underworld and Pluto, Vulcan has been used in astronomy to describe a hypothetical planet that was to find Mercury and Sun. And even though today we know that this world does not exist, the word “Vulcanoïde” means any asteroid passing through the area between Mercury and the Sun.
Thus, although having arrived first, Vulcan was rejected. The two new moons of Pluto are called Kerberos and Styx. At first, they chose Cerberus (after the dog three heads that guards the gates of Hades) and in order to avoid confusion with an asteroid called Cerberus in 1865, they made a sprained their rules for choosing Greek version of the word: Kerberos. As a reminder, Styx is the name of the goddess who rules the underworld river, which is also called the Styx.
So guys IAU are far from being ka’tur V’tosh, they have their own logic. What matters now is to finally give names to exoplanets so I can vote for Coruscant.
