Orange promises it will soon cover the entire town of Palaiseau in optical fiber. A first that according to the operator allows to consider eventual extinction copper auspiciously.

Although the 100% fiber does not unanimous among operators involved in competition for mobile deployments, Orange draws on his side extremely positive experimentation 100% fiber engaged with the city of Palaiseau (Essonne). Stéphane Richard, CEO of the operator, delivered Friday morning at a press conference the latest figures on the project under the watchful eye of Fleur Pellerin.

Orange indicates that on the Greater Palaiseau (30 000 and 16 000 copper lines), 90% of households are now connectable to the optical fiber. The procedures are also undertaken for 5% of the remaining homes. The operator said well on track to reach its goal of 100% coverage within a few months

Friday, time was therefore to satisfecit:. Stéphane Richard has touted uses ” dramatically increased ‘found in fiber subscribers in Palaiseau which represent 75% of public customers of Orange consumption three times higher than that of ADSL customers, up to seven times more TV catching eight times more traffic back (upload), with “ migration is accompanied by a rise in the level of the selected range offers” since customers would three times more likely to opt for pay TV bouquets in addition to their triple play .

The next step will be in full scale. “ Starting today, we no longer sell offer on copper for all areas of the city where there is fiber “, has announced Stéphane Richard. The initiative would be a “ World “, although at this stage it does not yet cover the companies on the grounds that the latter are often still rely on analog for telephony.

The question is whether the 100% fiber well lead to the extinction of copper, its logical corollary. In this regard, Orange suggested the end of September, as revealed the Express that things may be more complicated than expected, partly because the other operators would not be as likely as him migrate to any optical fiber.

It is wrong to say that there is undue tension between operators about Palaiseau ” tempered Friday Stéphane Richard, while admitting that all was not yet settled as regards the wholesale market. “There work, carried out with the ARCEP and other operators to define the terms of this flip-flop, especially in terms of timing, but I am sure we will quickly find an agreement ” Has he even said.

Fleur Pellerin

The question is not whether there will be extinction of copper but of when and how ,” says Fleur Pellerin about it. To the Minister for the digital economy, the financial framework and the practical arrangements for the pooling would now sufficiently clear to overcome the reluctance. It adds the promise of such tripartite agreements involving operators, local authorities and state. The first of its kind is also signed on Monday (28 October) to Lille.

These agreements are commitments, not just intentions, with specific elements and true transparency in the deployment schedule and how to connect clients , “boasts the minister. In this context, politicians would therefore have a say on the deployment and communities have, above all, the ability to turn to the State for failure to hedge commitments. However, it will not exercise enforcement action for failure to avoid any effect “ disincentive .”
