New technologies and distracted driving – CNW Group (Press Release)

QUÉBEC, June 4, 2015 / CNW Telbec / – With the arrival of new technologies on the market, such as the smart watch, the Minister of Transport and Minister responsible for the Montreal Region, Mr. Robert Poeti, would recall drivers that distractions at night driving.

According to Article 327 of the Code of Road Safety: any speed or any action that could endanger the life or safety of persons or property is prohibited.

The use of a technology device, such as a smart watch, can be a distraction and its use is therefore not recommended driving situation. Wearing the smart watch is however not forbidden by law.

“Driving a vehicle is a complex task that requires the full attention of the driver. Steering wheel distractions are involved in half of all injury accidents and police are able to enforce the law if they see any action which might endanger the security of all. I recommend drivers to adopt safe behaviors and be focused on the road, “Mr. Poëti said.

Work under the responsibility of the Ministry of Transport and the Society of the Quebec Automobile Insurance are underway to modernize the Code of road safety. The new technologies are part of the reflection and recommendations follow. A bill will be tabled in the National Assembly next fall.
