While the cantons are required by the Confederation to fight more effectively against illiteracy, it is difficult to know how many Swiss citizens are affected by this phenomenon. The assessments in this area are old and the subject is still taboo in our society. Yet with the advent of information and communication technologies, reading and writing is more than ever essential.
